Healthday: Feb. 12, 2014 Further investigation needed to understand this racial disparity, researchers say WEDNESDAY, Feb. 12, 2014 (HealthDay News) — Black Americans are much more likely than Hispanics or whites to die from a stroke shortly after having an infection, a new study finds. “Infection before stroke appears to be most lethal for black Americans,” […]

Guidelines for the Prevention of Stroke in Women

Ahajournals: February 6, 2014 Purpose—The aim of this statement is to summarize data on stroke risk factors that are unique to and more common in women than men and to expand on the data provided in prior stroke guidelines and cardiovascular prevention guidelines for women. This guideline focuses on the risk factors unique to women, such […]

Most Important Outcomes Research Papers on Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack

CIRCOUTCOMES: January 14, 2014 Each year in the United States, approximately 800 000 men and women are affected by stroke, which equates to one incident of stroke every 40 seconds.1 Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death nationally and is one of the foremost contributors to functional disability.2 The cost to the US healthcare system is substantial. […]

Variations in Etiology and Management of Atrial Fibrillation in a Prospective Registry of 15,400 Emergency Department Patients in 46 Countries: The RE-LY AF Registry

CIRCULATIONAHA: January 24, 2014 Background—Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained arrhythmia; however little is known about patients in a primary care setting from high, middle and low-income countries. Methods and Results—This prospective registry enrolled patients presenting to an emergency department with AF at 164 sites in 46 countries representing all inhabited continents. Patient characteristics […]

A-Fib Doesn’t Mean You’re Banished to the Sidelines

HealthDay Reporter: FRIDAY, Jan. 10 (HealthDay News) — Cutting back on exercise, or stopping altogether, might seem like the right move for people whose heart beats too fast and erratically, a condition called atrial fibrillation. But that’s not necessarily so. In fact, staying active — biking, swimming, perhaps even playing pickup basketball, for instance — might […]

Detection of Atrial Fibrillation After Ischemic Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack

STROKEAHA: January 2, 2014 Background and Purpose—Atrial fibrillation (AF) confers a high risk of recurrent stroke, although detection methods and definitions of paroxysmal AF during screening vary. We therefore undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the frequency of newly detected AF using noninvasive or invasive cardiac monitoring after ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack. […]

Atrial Fibrillation and the Risk of Myocardial Infarction

JAMA: January 2014 Importance  Myocardial infarction (MI) is an established risk factor for atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the extent to which AF is a risk factor for MI has not been investigated. Objective  To examine the risk of incident MI associated with AF. Design, Setting, and Participants  A prospective cohort of 23 928 participants residing in the continental United […]

Awareness of the Role of Atrial Fibrillation as a Cause of Ischemic Stroke

STROKEAHA: December 19, 2013 Atrial fibrillation (AF) in the presence of mitral stenosis, a consequence of rheumatic heart disease, was long recognized as the basis for cerebral infarction. Although it had long been acknowledged that atrial stasis resulting from mitral stenosis, often in the presence of AF, predisposed to thrombus formation, investigators questioned whether the AF […]

Clinical TrialsSaturday, February 8th, 2014 BMC Health Services Research: January 17, 2014 Family caregivers provide invaluable support to stroke survivors during their recovery, rehabilitation, and community re-integration. Unfortunately, it is not standard clinical practice to prepare and support caregivers in this role and, as a result, many experience stress and poor health that can compromise stroke survivor recovery and threaten the sustainability of keeping the stroke survivor at home. We developed the Timing it Right Stroke Family Support Program (TIRSFSP) to guide the timing of delivering specific types of education and support to meet caregivers’ evolving needs. The objective of this multi-site randomized controlled trial is to determine if delivering the TIRSFSP across the stroke care continuum improves caregivers’ sense of being supported and emotional well-being.
