Most Important Outcomes Research Papers on Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack

CIRCOUTCOMES: January 14, 2014 Each year in the United States, approximately 800 000 men and women are affected by stroke, which equates to one incident of stroke every 40 seconds.1 Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death nationally and is one of the foremost contributors to functional disability.2 The cost to the US healthcare system is substantial. Ischemic Stroke

STROKEAHA: January 16, 2014 Individual cohort studies may lack the sample size necessary for precise subgroup estimates of vascular risk. Whether women and men are at similar cigarette smoking-related stroke risk was uncertain. A meta-analysis of 81 cohorts, including almost 4 million persons, found both women (relative risk [RR], 1.83; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.58–2.1) and […]

Advances in Stroke: Population Studies 2013

group

January 15, 2014 The population burden of stroke mortality continues to plummet in developed countries. For example, in the United States, among the 30 leading causes of death the 37% decline in age-adjusted stroke deaths between 1990 and 2010 was only exceeded by a 68% decline from HIV/AIDS, a 44% decline from ischemic heart disease, […]

Systematic Review of Health Disparities for Cardiovascular Diseases and Associated Factors among American Indian and Alaska Native Populations

PLOS: January 15, 2014 American Indians and Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations experience significant health disparities compared to non-Hispanic white populations. Cardiovascular disease and related risk factors are increasingly recognized as growing indicators of global health disparities. However, comparative reports on disparities among this constellation of diseases for AI/AN populations have not been systematically reviewed. Objectives […]

NewsSaturday, February 8th, 2014 STROKEAHA: December 19, 2013 Background and Purpose—Higher levels of anxiety are associated with increased risk for coronary heart disease. However, few studies have investigated whether anxiety is associated with stroke risk. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between anxiety symptoms and incident stroke in a nationally representative longitudinal study of the US population. Methods—Participants (n=6019) in the First National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were assessed at baseline and followed for 16.29±4.75 years. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals of incident stroke associated with a 1 SD increase in anxiety symptoms. Models were adjusted for standard cardiovascular risk factors and additionally for depression. Cardiovascular Disease Knowledge and Weight Perception Among Hispanic and Non-Hispanic White Wome

Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.: November 27, 2013 Background: While knowledge of cardiovascular disease (CVD) has improved, it remains low among minority women, thereby contributing to disparities and posing health challenges. Moreover, substantial numbers of women do not recognize that excess weight imposes CVD risk and increases morbidity and decreases survival. In order to test the hypothesis that […]

Herpes zoster as a risk factor for stroke and TIA

cardio2

Neurology: 1/2/14   Objectives: Stroke and TIA are recognized complications of acute herpes zoster (HZ). In this study, we evaluated HZ as a risk factor for cerebrovascular disease (stroke and TIA) and myocardial infarction (MI) in a UK population cohort. Methods: A retrospective cohort of 106,601 HZ cases and 213,202 controls matched for age, sex, and general practice […]

Eighteen-year trends in stroke mortality and the prognostic influence of comorbidity

cadio

Neurology: 12/20/13 Objectives: To examine 18-year trends in short-term and long-term stroke mortality and the prognostic influence of comorbidity. Methods: We conducted a nationwide population-based cohort study. Using the Danish National Registry of Patients, covering all Danish hospitals, we identified all 219,354 patients with a first-time hospitalization for stroke during 1994–2011. We computed standardized 30-day, 1-year, and 5-year […]

Global stroke statistics

Wiley: 12/19/13 In many countries, stroke is a lower priority than other diseases despite its public health impact. One issue is a lack of readily accessible comparative data to help make the case for the development of national stroke strategies. To assist in this process, we need to have a common repository of the latest published […]

Heart Disease and Stroke Statistic

Circ.ahajournals.org: 12/18/13 Each year, the American Heart Association (AHA), in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, and other government agencies, brings together the most up-to-date statistics on heart disease, stroke, other vascular diseases, and their risk factors and presents them in its Heart Disease and Stroke Statistical Update.
